What is theriomancy? Theriomancy or zoomancy is a form of divination that involves observation of the appearance and behavior of wild animals. Common forms of theriomancy include ailuromancy, the study of cat movements, and augury, the study of bird formations. While augury appears to be more fixed than other systems of divination, with some sources going as far as to interpret the direction of the birds’ flight, calls, and times of day, individual animal totem or spirit animals also have rich symbolism, which can be accessed by tuning into the oversoul of the animal.
I asked Spirit, what do all those who frequent this page need to know this week to stay in alignment with the highest good? Then I drew a Spirit Animal oracle card, and received Wolf Spirit. Wolf continued to appear in a collective tarot card reading on youtube. Later that day, I looked down and even noticed it on the buttons of a sweater I seldom wear!
Wolf symbolism and meaning is connected with noble traits such as loyalty, family and friendship, teamwork, protection, wildness, freedom, instincts, playfulness. Since wolves have lived throughout the world, historically they have been subjects in the mythology and folklore of many cultures. To those who feel a kinship with these special animals, says uniguide.com Wolf Spirit is a sacred figure.
Wolf Spirit materializes when it’s time to make our position known, adds whatismyspiritanimal.com. Do you feel misunderstood? Need help learning how to take a stand without producing conflict? Wolf as a totem animal belongs to those who can break away from the pack. Perhaps your strength and stamina could use an energetic boost? Wolf Spirit helps us harness our innermost wild nature while protecting our emotional and physical well-being. Wolf Spirit may also be invoked as a power animal when we need help placing our trust in others.
According to Hay House author and oracle card teacher extraordinaire, Colette Baron-Reid, Wolf Spirit is also associated with turning knowledge into wisdom. For this reason the shadow side of this spirit animal cautions against avarice, cruelty, and cunningness. Often teaching the lesson of humility in the process, this spirit animal empowers us “to look into the world with reverence, awe and insatiable curiosity,” writes Baron-Reid; “You will never grow old if you are willing to keep learning. Wolf Spirit is waiting to be your mystical, loving guide.”
INTERPRETATION
As we enter the week, Australian cosmologist Elizabeth Peru notes that Mercury is a prominent energy influencer as it prepares to go retrograde. Indeed, Mercury in its pre-shadow phase is sending us a stellar broadcast to stand in our power. The source and Wolf Spirit embolden us to “drop pretenses and old fears by choosing to respond differently to life—starting now. You’re being helped by Mercury. Take a chance. Make a bold move.”
Starting Monday, January 10, two Neptune transits transpire, one favorable and one challenging. Neptune in Pisces sextile the Sun in Capricorn donates refined feelings and sensations, a good taste, a strong sense of art, originality, a deep understanding, a tendency to mystical studies, and love for beauty. While the planet’s square with Mars in Sagittarius on Tuesday, January 11 gives us a powerful imagination, we may tend towards extremism. “Strong sexual desire [may be] difficult to satisfy due to a lack of realism,” warns astrosofa.com; “[We] like to blame others when things go wrong.”
An enigmatic cosmic influencer, Peru adds that Mars may produce a feeling of anticipation or restlessness as though something ‘big’ is about to happen, or an impulse towards some grand, perhaps long-anticipated move. “Be mindful that sometimes you need a rush of incoming explosive energy to balance the implosive potential that comes from holding in too much for too long,“ the source explains; “A build-up of lingering energy is about to burst and you get to decide how this happens and when.” Wolf Spirit reminds us that we already hold the power to affect great change from within. Seek to be the influencer rather than the influenced!
On Friday, January 14, Mercury goes retrograde in Aquarius. Square Retrograding Uranus in Taurus at this time, reactivating the powerful Saturn-Uranus Square that influenced the collective throughout 2021, astrobutterfly.com predicts important announcements and revelations about these themes. For example, there may be some revisions and new perspectives being considered about the pandemic. While this may not be the final direction since Mercury just went retrograde, on a personal level pay attention to what happens as Uranus stations direct (January 18) and Mercury (February 3), the source emphasizes; it may open our eyes to something that has been overlooked in the past.
Pluto is also making an impact just as Mercury goes retrograde. “This planetary body, whose key focus is upon emanating universal love, often attracts the attention of those who can feel overlooked or even unloved,” emphasizes Peru. Especially as Venus remains in an orb with Pluto as it retrogrades through Capricorn, many in the collective could be feeling less than whole. While confronting, this is simply part of the soulful process of knowing who we truly are. Wolf Spirit encourages us to try to resist impulse to (pre)judge, for this undercuts the potential for learning and growth on offer.
When the Sun is conjunct Pluto in Capricorn on Sunday, January 16, more of the shadow side of Wolf Spirit may be triggered. Oh no! Astrosofa.com describes the conjunction as a “disaster aspect that can manifest itself in life crises, struggles for power, and nervous tension; disabilities and restrictions—even disputes with the state, authorities, and superiors.” An annual transit which asks us to surrender our ego (Sun) to whatever higher truth that is required of us (Pluto), astrobutterfly.com helps contextualize this further. The source reminds us that Sun conjunct Pluto is just one transit within the Capricorn Stellium which started back in December. Since the outer planet has also recently been transited by faster-moving personal planets Mercury, Venus, and, by March, Mars even, Pluto energy invites us to transform at a core, foundational level. If you’re still unsure about how these transformations apply to you personally, pay close attention to any events, downloads, or epiphanies you may receive this weekend. While some deeper insights into who we truly are may be hard accept, as soon as we surrender to whatever that truth is for us, the source proffers with Wolf wisdom, now the very thing we’ve been terrified of can become our greatest ally!
Finally, on Monday, January 17, we have our Full Moon in Cancer. The first full moon of the year, it is opposite Pluto, reinforcing the transformation and renewal themes of the Capricorn Stellium. If you’ve been feeling the Pluto pressure, but are unclear on how to proceed, call upon Wolf Spirit and look to the illuminating full moon to provide some outside perspective. “You’ll be able to step out of yourself and look at things from a witness perspective,” says astrobutterfly.com; “Things may suddenly become clear, and you’ll know exactly what you need to do.”
