Our astro-oracle is a theriomancic messenger:
Great Blue Heron Spirit
What is theriomancy? Theriomancy or zoomancy is a form of divination that involves observation of the appearance and behavior of wild animals. Common forms of theriomancy include ailuromancy, the study of cat movements, and augury, the study of bird formations. While augury appears to be more fixed than other systems of divination, with some sources going as far as to interpret the direction of the birds’ flight, calls, and times of day, individual animal totem or spirit animals also have rich symbolism, which can be accessed by tuning into the oversoul of the animal.
Great Blue Heron symbolism is strongly connected with spiritual awakening, self-reflection, introspection, and solitude. A different if not somewhat singular creature seldom seen on the periphery of lakes, rivers, and ponds, it’s known for its calm, peaceful, and patient demeanor. When this messenger animal arrives, according to aboutspiritual.com, your Spirit Guides are sending you an added boost of positive energy to overcome current and upcoming challenges. Having recognized your innate potential, they want to give you the additional dose of wisdom and encouragement necessary to reach your goal, however seemingly elusive. Your sacred duty is to merely to receive this blessing, give thanks, and continue to keep your heart open to allow in more of this energy as a divine and sacred gift.
For those on a spiritual, self-healing, or ascension journey this spirit animal pushes us onwards and upwards towards transformation, mental-emotional, intuitive, and even psychic development. This may also involve the (re)discovery and honing of our soul's original gifts. Teaching us to cultivate inner peace and self-love, Great Blue Heron Spirit also reminds us to build and maintain healthy self-acceptance, respect, and serenity in the process. When great blue heron is hunting, one observes s/he can stand still for hours, waiting for the perfect moment to catch a fish. Accordingly, if we apply the same analogy to our own spiritual life, it gives us pause to stop for a moment and dive deep into our souls to find and reclaim our true self. Call upon Great Blue Heron Spirit wisdom to engage your senses, focus your energy, and to help discern the decisive moment to take that next right action step!

The Lady of Shalott by A. Tennyson, Dodd Mead & Company Publishers, 1881. Original lithograph by Brett Lithographing Co, NY.
Although I had long been in the practice of posting a regular, weekly astro-oracle blog often featuring a different spirit animal or crystal spirit messenger, I have yet to cover Great Blue Heron Spirit for the reason that it is my personal spirit animal, and thus distinguishable from those of my collective energy updates. Since I rendezvoused with this oracle more than three times this week, however, I knew it was timely to include it here. Interestingly, although great blue heron is not mentioned directly in Tennyson’s poem The Lady of Shalott (1832), its mystical significance figured into an 1881 edition of the poem published by Dodd & Mead Company, New York. In the colorful plate by Brett Lithographing Co., the bird is demurely depicted in the foreground on the river side among the lily pads and cattails, its neck characteristically coiled, and long leg poised for action in juxtaposition to the fragment of a windmill and the “reapers reaping early/in among the beaded barley” in the background. The Lady of the Lake and High Priestess of Avalon have been associated with a graceful, all-seeing swan throughout Celtic folklore, and more recently in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s historical fantasy novel the Mists of Avalon (1983) which famously retold the Arthurian legend from the women’s perspective; nonetheless, Great Blue Heron Spirit would still seem an appropriate animal totem for the hermit, high priestess, alchemist, ascetic, magician, modern mystic, initiate, or those on a conscious spiritual path alike!
"On a personal level, Great Blue Heron Spirit often presents itself when my guides are reminding me to find alignment before taking action. Abraham-Hicks has referred to this state of readiness and grace as “tuned in, tapped in, turned on.”
On a personal level, Great Blue Heron Spirit often presents itself when my guides are reminding me to find alignment before taking action. Abraham-Hicks has referred to this state of readiness and grace as “tuned in, tapped in, turned on.” Usually by the time my walk has concluded, the grounding and therapeutic benefits of exercise and nature have pulled me back into the vortex, but this ol' faithful spirit animal always arrives as a useful gauge of alignment all the same. Similarly, when I am out in the world, often I rendezvous with my own doppelgänger model car or manifest signs of my own name when I am guided to recalibrate or realign. After I have been practicing this vibration long enough to get back into alignment, my sync pattern starts to change to include other divine winks such as signs of my twin flame’s name, his spirit animal, doppelgänger model car, and birthday number sequence. While this may foreshadow further communication from my counterpart in the 3D, more often it’s merely a sign that I am in alignment with my highest intentions. In theory, if we were able to sustain this momentum indefinitely as though an infinite ray on a geometric plane we’d be promised the highest timeline, alas the karmic density and contrast of the Earthly Matrix is not without its challenges. This is why Abraham-Hicks explains that we should aim to practice this momentum most of the time rather than all of the time. Indeed, manifestation is a process— if we aim too high, we may inadvertently slip back into a state of spiritual narcolepsy or bypass and get caught “crossways of the current and [therefore] disallowing our broader point of view.”

. Speaking of alignment, Great Blue Heron Spirit’s visit also arrives on the verge of one of the year’s most significant astrological events—the North Node’s conjunction with Uranus in Taurus. Strongly connected with life purpose, when the North Node is confronted by cosmic disrupter Uranus, everything unaligned must go! While Uranus transits can be intense, sudden ‘tower moments’ often portending a necessary breakdown before breakthrough, this “epochal conjunction," only occurring once every 15 years, has been further fueled by the fiery planet Mars’ ingress into Taurus starting Tuesday, July 5. While the North Node and Uranus have been in an orb since late April, writer, storyteller, and mystic Jessica Davidson adds that the coming of Mars brings more “volatility and churn” as it spurs us into action, potentially paradigm-shifting and soul-aligned action. While the conjunction between Uranus and the North Node is exact on Sunday, July 31, and with Mars on August 1, Mars will remain in orb to the planets from July 22 to August 15 throughout its remaining transit in Taurus. While ‘expect the unexpected’ characterizes the building intensity of the triple conjunction's culmination in July and August, the transit also has longer-term cumulative effects since Uranus will stay within a few degrees of the North Node for the rest of the year and into February 2023.
Like Archangel Gabriel, the messenger angel of revelation, Great Blue Heron Spirit heralds the good news that the North Node conjunct Uranus will ultimately only bring us those events, opportunities, and people that serve our highest good.
While most people are filled with positive anticipation during Uranus transits because they hope the planet will bring them something they want, or make the impossible possible, interestingly, astrobutterfly.com defines ‘expect the unexpected’ as something which “eventually happens that is not even on the radar of our awareness.” Like Archangel Gabriel, the messenger angel of revelation, Great Blue Heron Spirit heralds the good news that the North Node conjunct Uranus will ultimately only bring us those events, opportunities, and people that serve our highest good. While the conjunction in the fixed sign of Taurus may be both unsettling yet liberating, on an individual level, it may be experienced as a pull or higher calling to live life on our own terms. Whether a wake-up or shake-up, the spirit animal empowers us to recognize this divine orchestration as our cosmic opportunity to (re)discover hidden resources and talents, and finally shuffle off outmoded mental models or behaviors that may have long been sabotaging us.
