What is theriomancy? Theriomancy or zoomancy is a form of divination that involves observation of the appearance and behavior of wild animals. Common forms of theriomancy include ailuromancy, the study of cat movements, and augury, the study of bird formations. While augury appears to be more fixed than other systems of divination, with some sources going as far as to interpret the direction of the birds’ flight, calls, and times of day, individual animal totem or spirit animals also have rich symbolism, which can be accessed by tuning into the oversoul of the animal.
I asked Spirit, what do all those who frequent this page need to know this week to stay in alignment with the highest good? Then I went out for a walk and rendezvoused with a pair of squirrels playfully chasing each other near the roadside. Since they were so absorbed in their antics that they nearly collided with me, I recognized them as our spirit animal. The next day, Squirrel Spirit continued to guide me as I came upon another one along the walkway to my car, as well as in my daily oracle card draw!
Squirrel symbolizes energy, practicality, and playfulness. The spirit animal may be associated with an abundance of money, food, warmth, love, health, comfort, and rest. It is a good representation of hard work and determination. It teaches us work-life balance by showing us how it playfully collect nuts, all the while keeping up with playful antics. Squirrel Spirit may be here to say, “You need to have more fun in your life!”
Since squirrel can always be seen stocking up on nuts for the cold, dark winter days ahead, it is also a symbol of preparedness. Seeing a squirrel could mean that we must invest in our present for a better future. On a more personal, daily level, it may also be here remind us to stop dilly-dallying around, especially if one has a time-sensitive task to complete!
Alternatively, it may indicate that we have been working too hard, are too serious, or that we need to relax a bit and have some fun. In dreams if we have been working towards a particular goal, or even multiple projects and feel that everything we are doing is futile, Squirrel encourages us to persist so that we can reap the rewards!
INTERPRETATION
As we start the week, Mercury and Jupiter have just gone direct, leaving only three remaining planetary bodies in retrograde—Neptune, Chiron, and Uranus. “If you’ve worked this retrograde energy well, you’re now clearer, more on point and in your personal power,” observes Australian cosmologist Elizabeth Peru, who respects retrogrades for the incredible insight that they provide into what’s normally hidden or covered up. Indeed, revealing the truth can be both healing and liberating. “You’ve come a long way in 2021,” coaches the source and Squirrel Spirit; “You’ve turned multiple corners already and now some of your biggest accomplishment come to pass. Move ahead confidently.”
Starting Monday, October 18, the trine between Mars in Libra and Jupiter in Aquarius gives us strong vitality, wellbeing, and great enthusiasm. We are expansive and enterprising, act decisively, and have an organizational prowess. As a result, professional or financial success may materialize. Our independent spirit also grants us “the right decisions in the emotional field.” In fact, this influence is so good according to astrosofa.com that it’s unfortunate it only lasts two days! Especially now that abundant Jupiter has gone direct, Peru reminds us that we may start to feel lighter and optimistic over the following 48 hours. As the Full Moon approaches, Squirrel Spirit encourages us to get grounded and ready for action again!
Wednesday, October 20, the Full Moon in Aries continues the theme of action initiated by the New Moon in Libra, and culminates the intentions we set back in April with the New Moon in Aries. Amplified by a feisty masculine energy, “it’s as fiery and as cardinal as can be” says astrobutterfly.com. Opposite Mars and Square Pluto, it’s also potentially an explosive one. According to astrosofa.com, the opposition between the Moon and Mars makes us belligerent and hasty. While repressed energy may result in moodiness, tension, or even break-ups, passion is also possible. Meanwhile, the Square with Pluto produces a dreamy disposition, the tendency towards self-deception, emotional imbalances, passiveness or hypersensitivity, and a weakened instinctual life. We could get lost in wishful thinking altogether. Whatever transpires, this Full Moon will shake us to the core—especially if one has planets in other cardinal signs, emphasizes astrobutterfly.com “you [will] want to be very mindful of what you do with what emerges from this.”
Under the Full Moon light, Peru and Squirrel Spirit empower us to spend time outside in nature, expressing gratitude for the growth that we’ve accomplished. Indeed, the recent energy shifts have arrived that have started to tip the scales in our favor as new opportunities start to present themselves. With this supportive energy wave also comes an element of swiftness and even surprise. “You could find that you’re feeling the urge to move on implementing changes that you’ve been hesitant about. Be open-minded and flexible under this cosmic flow!” the sources recommend.
Starting Thursday, October 21, be on the lookout for the challenging square between Mars and Pluto. Triggering uncontrolled, jealous, offensive, vulgar, and ruthless behavior, during this two-day influence, astrosofa.com cautions against “financial damage, addiction to waste, as well as excessive eroticism.” On a more uplifting note, Peru adds that Mars is working with Pluto providing a firm opportunity to harness the power of our own will. “This may be difficult to accept but it’s highly possible that you find it hard to let go of painful experiences [to which] you have a deep attachment… you may still keep revisiting them, as your struggles have become part of your identity” the source explains. If so, Peru and Squirrel Spirit invite us to harness this cosmic influence to our advantage by finding a new way: “Hold firm. When you feel yourself fixating on something troubling, pull yourself up… Pause and ask soul to take this burden from you for healing and release. Feel the pain of holding on leave your personality, as you trust in the higher power to resolve all.”
Finally, as we enter the weekend, the Sun moves into Scorpio on Friday, October 22. Scorpio season is our annual opportunity to get in touch with the powerful, deeply spiritual energy of renewal and transformation. We all have areas of life that need refining, explains astrobutterfly.com—the Sun is in Scorpio helps us become more intentional about what we want to change, and then take the necessary action steps. Squirrel Spirit emboldens us to see those changes through.
