What is theriomancy? Theriomancy or zoomancy is a form of divination that involves observation of the appearance and behavior of wild animals. Common forms of theriomancy include ailuromancy, the study of cat movements, and augury, the study of bird formations. While augury appears to be more fixed than other systems of divination, with some sources going as far as to interpret the direction of the birds’ flight, calls, and times of day, individual animal totem or spirit animals also have rich symbolism, which can be accessed by tuning into the oversoul of the animal.

I asked Spirit, what do all those who frequent this page need to know this week to stay in alignment with the highest good? Then I rendezvoused with a flock of seagulls outside my window who were “laughing” audibly then vociferously. Although I live near a lake, seldom do I encounter gulls offshore. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, seagull’s flight inland may portend a storm. More generally, however, Seagull Spirit is a symbol of freedom, adaptability, and resourcefulness, as well as opportunities and favorable circumstances.

When we need to take a different perspective on things, Seagull Spirit crosses our path to prompt us to take a step back. Indeed, often the solution lies in changing one’s attitude towards the problem at hand. According to spirit-animals.com, the spirit animal empowers us to rise above the drama and see beyond our emotional boundaries, limitations, and setbacks. While this process may push us outside our familiar comfort zone, recall the New Age adage ‘if you do what you did, you’ll get what you got.’ In order to do something never attempted before, one needs to think outside the box!

Known to pick over wastelands just to find something to eat, seagull symbolism reminds us to not be wasteful. Now that Venus and Mars have joined Mercury and Saturn in Aquarius, an Aquarian Stellium continues until the later part of the week, when a Piscean Stellium takes its place. According to Australian cosmologist Elizabeth Peru, “there’s now an extended energy period where the new way ahead for humanity (The Aquarian Era) seeks to balance, calm and moderate the old and outgoing way (The Piscean Era).” During the first part of the week, freedom-loving Seagull Spirit blows in fresh, inspirational ideas under the Aquarian Stellium. “The creations that you’ve been working upon for some time are manifesting into form,” continues Peru; “Look for the signs that acknowledge the time and dedication that you’ve been putting into the relation of your higher reality.”

Wednesday, March 9, Mercury enters Pisces. Torn between the head and the heart, astrosofa.com warns that our fondness for other fellow human beings may come at the cost of our personal interests, precipitating in empathy overload. As the “I-only-believe-in-what-I-can-see-feel-and-touch” planet, astrobutterfly.com adds that Mercury can have difficulties staying factual and concise in watery Pisces. To make the most of the coming two weeks, the source and treasure-seeking Seagull Spirit recommend immersing oneself in Piscean activities, such as fantasy books and movies, vision board crafting, and dream journaling, but most importantly, surrender to Pisces’ mysterious ways of receiving and interpreting information!

With Mercury’s shift into Pisces, a palpable changeover of energy can now be felt as the Aquarian Stellium ends and the Piscean Stellium begins. Peru explains that there’s a (re)balancing taking place: “You’ve had several days where you’ve allowed new thoughts and higher wavelengths… Now you’re challenged by your old ways coming back in to test your resolve.” The source and adaptable Seagull Spirit encourage us to spread our wings as old established ways give way to wise newness.

The Sun is conjunct Neptune in Pisces on Sunday, March 13. Since Neptune rules the parts of ourselves that we may overlook, astrobutterfly.com explains that such conjunctions present the opportunity to understand something about ourselves that may otherwise be difficult to grasp. While the planet tends to trigger our sensitivities by exposing our blind spots, the source continues that Neptune also exposes “our zones of genius.” Since the Sun shines a light on what’s otherwise difficult to see, a well-rounded understanding of oneself and one’s humanity occurs.
