What is theriomancy? Theriomancy or zoomancy is a form of divination that involves observation of the appearance and behavior of wild animals. Common forms of theriomancy include ailuromancy, the study of cat movements, and augury, the study of bird formations. While augury appears to be more fixed than other systems of divination, with some sources going as far as to interpret the direction of the birds’ flight, calls, and times of day, individual animal totem or spirit animals also have rich symbolism, which can be accessed by tuning into the oversoul of the animal.

I asked Spirit, what do all those who frequent this page need to know this week to stay in alignment with the highest good? Then I went out for a walk and rendezvoused with a blue jay who suddenly dive-bombed the ground from a nearby tree. The very next day, I noticed another blue jay playfully darting from tree to tree. On account of its repetition, I recognized it as our weekly spirit animal.

According to yourtango.com, blue jay is a popular bird native to eastern North America known for its loud song and vibrant blue color which is the same color as the throat chakra — the chakra of truth. Indeed, much of its spiritual meaning derives from its appearance. The source explains that blue jays are rather simple to recognize due to their distinctive look and behavior. The spirit animal is rather large with a crest color that can range from blue to white and black. While noisier than other birds, it is also described as curious, trustworthy, talkative, and resourceful.

Commonly regarded as a spiritual animal representing faithfulness, solidarity, courage, and protection, Blue Jay Spirit is also associated with intelligence, communication, and curiosity. Depending on its context, however, the shadow side of this spirit animal may symbolize noise, mimicry, mischief, and changeability. While one may notice them more often in times of self-doubt, the most common interpretation of its visit suggests a loyal and trustworthy person.

As songbirds that love to sing in their spare time, blue jay's sense of creativity is also one of its celebrated attributes. Enchanting everyone around it with its special sounds, the spirit animal help us understand the importance of expressing our inner sense of creativity. To this end, where there is the tendency to try to fit in our environment rather than stand out, Blue Jay Spirit reminds us to start expressing ourselves more freely. There are aspects of our personalities that are unique. Sharing our creativity can positively impact our environment and also ourselves.

INTERPRETATION

As we start the week, Australian cosmologist Elizabeth Peru notes that there are still seven planets in retrograde; meanwhile, the Moon moves into Libra on Tuesday, October 5, forming a planetary stellium with Mars, Sun, and Retrograding Mercury. “That sounds like a lot because it is,” the source asserts—what with Pluto and Saturn about to move direct again this week, and Mercury on October 18, “October is the month where life starts to move ahead again.” In effect until Thursday, October 7, Peru describes the Libran Stellium as “a high-powered cosmic period” where the “energy compounds the Libran force, stacking up the qualities of balance and harmony.” Especially if your head has been ruling your heart, the source and Blue Jay Spirit are here to remind us to 'let it go'--"that’s the message of the Stellium. Trust in your higher, masterful self to lead the way. Great advances are happening.”

On Wednesday, October 6, we have our New Moon in Libra. The New Moon is also directly conjunct Mars and Mercury in the Libra Stellium. “This is a very intentional New Moon,” says Astrobutterfly.com; “even if Mars in Libra is still interested in a win-win outcome, [the planet] will spend less time thinking things through and… just ‘go for it’!” While astrosofa.com adds that Mercury’s conjunction with the New Moon presents a good starting point and a basis for all manner of business since we are mentally active and have good judgment and rhetorical skills; alas with Mercury Retrograde, we may experience some resistance. For more information about how these influences are impacting your life this week, have a look at which house the Libran Stellium is transiting in your natal chart. The New Moon calls for your attention to be focused upon Libran themes such as the creation of greater beauty and flow in your life. Peru and Blue Jay Spirit empower us to set some powerful new intentions, “mak[ing] solid inroads upon appreciating the call of nature’s harming to being stability to your body, family, home, work environment and to our beloved Earth.”

Also on this day, Pluto goes direct in Capricorn. The close of this lengthy retrograde, which had been in effect since April together with today’s New Moon “could leave us feeling solemn and in need of slowing down,” says Peru. The source explains that since Pluto is situated in the “outer mystical reaches of our solar system, it’s a planetary body which calls for you to create a deeper connection with your hidden, often-darker aspects.” These aspects of our life path may be ones which we’ve judged or even misunderstood. If Pluto Retrograde gave us the opportunity to work in the shadow of our subconscious these past five months, astrobutterfly.com and Blue Jay Spirit add that Pluto direct empowers us to bring this awareness of our inner transformation into the outer realm as well.

Venus enters Sagittarius on Thursday, October 7. While Venus in Scorpio prompted a deep dive into our subconscious level to do some uncomfortable yet necessary shadow work, “acknowledging that the glass is never really empty… give[s] a whole new meaning to our existence” astrobutterfly.com asserts. Indeed, Venus in Sagittarius may now propel us to hope, dream big, and get us back out into the wild blue yonder. When Venus is in Sagittarius, our ideal being awakens. Our intuition and self-confidence is high, says astrosofa.com; and with abundant Jupiter as the planetary ruler of this sign, our minds are expansive. We are optimistic, generous, and warm in spirit and our spirituality may also be heightened. Our passion for travel and rural pastimes awakens. When it comes to love and relationships, while we may be on a quest for lasting love, during this time, we may also sport the short-lived fling!

Also on Thursday, the exact conjunction between Sun and Mars in Libra gives us great courage and willpower. We are energetic and enthusiastic; we want to lead other people and a strong desire for love stirs. On the other hand, astrosofa.com warns we may be aggressive and pretentious, hardly tolerating criticism during this influence. We may selfishly seek external validation for our achievements rather than finding it within. The shadow side of Blue Jay Spirit cautions against overactivity and competitiveness which may lead to rash actions.

As we near the weekend, Friday, October 8, the Sun is conjunct Mercury and Mars in Libra, forming a triple Sun-Mercury-Mars conjunction. While it is not rare to have three personal planets in the same sign, to have them all meet at the same degree is indeed significant. Initiating a new Sun cycle between both Mercury and Mars, “we get the opportunity to work with one area of our psyche,” explains astrobutterfly.com—for example, our thinking (Mercury), feelings (Venus), actions (Mars), etc. Therefore, when our thoughts (Mercury) also align with our actions (Mars), a very potent manifesting energy is put into motion... “We become intentional about what we want to create. We walk the talk!" attest the source and Blue Jay Spirit.

Astrosofa.com adds that Sun conjunct Retrograding Mercury provides good mental energy, agility, concentration, elocutionary prowess, and, potentially, a keen interest in art and literature. Meanwhile, the conjunction between Retrograding Mercury and Mars may produce restlessness and a short attention span. While we like discussion like Blue Jay Spirit, we may be rash with our judgments and impatiently interrupt interlocutors. Especially with Sun in the mix our minds are likely working fine, alas Mars may make us too quick in our decisions attracting the mistakes and errors germane to Mercury Retrograde. The source and Blue Jay Spirit encourage us to slow down so prematurity doesn’t lead to disadvantages!

Finally, Sunday, October 10, Saturn goes direct in Aquarius. The ruler of Capricorn, Saturn is all about rules and structure, and thereby restriction. But like a parent who teaches healthy boundaries by modeling tough love, Saturn Retrograde gave us an understanding of what was longer working in our life. Saturn direct presents an opportunity to follow through and make the necessary adjustments. Indeed, “the change in motion itself is very cathartic, and will help us get unstuck in the areas of our life ruled by Saturn – that’s the houses where we have Capricorn and Aquarius on the cusp,” astrobutterfly.com explains.
